Step by Step
Add Images for Enhanced Podcasts
Play your podcast and when you get to a spot where you’d like to show a picture, hit the space bar to stop playback and drag a photo over and drop it in the “Podcast Track” track at the top of the Track area right where your playhead is. Keep playing your podcast and dropping in photos as you go. I do a lot of podcasts where I need to show screenshots, so I can capture a screenshot by hitting shift-command-4 and dragging over the area of the screen that I want to show people. That saves as a picture to my desktop where I rename it and then drag it to the Podcast Track.
You may also want your podcast to be represented by an image. If you’re handy, you could make a logo for your podcast, or just draw it on a sheet of paper and take a picture of it with a simple digital “point and shoot” camera. Click on your Podcast Track and the area that had been your “Audio Region” is now the “Podcast Markers” region. You may have already noticed this change when you were dragging your pictures onto the Podcast Track. Anyway, to the far left is a blank space that says “Drag Episode Artwork here.” Place your Podcast logo or picture in that square. I’m going to use the image of the New Project screen where you could see the little Podcast Purple icon. Then I’ll double click it to launch an image editor. Now I can zoom all the way in on the Podcast icon and pan over so it’s the only thing in the window. Cool huh?
There are just two steps left. First, every place we put in a picture can be a chapter that people can jump to if they want. Name each chapter if you want to. You can also assign web page URLs to each chapter, so if you’ve got a podcast about fine dining, you can direct people to each restaurant’s webpage while you’re talking about it. Or, if your podcast is up on iTunes, you can have the URL direct people to your website for more information.
Publish!
The final step is to publish your podcast. You can send it to your iTunes Library. You can save it as a file and email it to friends, or you can send it to iWeb and place it on a Podcasting or Blog page and direct your friends to listen to it on your webpage. To do that, go to the Share menu at the top of the screen and choose Send Podcast to iWeb. Make sure to check AAC Encoding if you want to be able to export with your pictures. If you choose MP3 Encoding, it can only export as a “simple podcast.”
When your podcast is ready, iWeb automatically launches and lets you choose either the Podcast or Blog theme. Pick one and your podcast is automatically embedded in a page and ready to go up on the web. (Check out my article on using iWeb if you’ve never done that.) All you have to do is change the title and text on the web page, publish your site and announce it to your friends. Next thing you know, people are calling you Oprah or Ellen or – if you’re old school – Merv Griffin.
Have fun with your newfound power. You’re broadcasting on the web! Remember, use your powers for good, not evil.

They’re probably a little more than you may want to spend, but they sound great because the audio remains digital all the way to the speaker since it uses the USB out of your computer to feed it instead of the analog headphone jack.
